HIERARCHY introduces true hierarchical storage management to OpenVMS. HIERARCHY manages disk space by leaving active files readily accessible on primary storage. Less active, "cold" files can be automatically and seamlessly archived or "shelved" to secondary or background storage. Archived files are routinely retrieved when opened by any OpenVMS application. Since no prior planning is required for an application to open an archived file, changes need not be made to existing run procedures.
